Washing your face seems simple enough.

But as with many things, the devil is in the details. A proper cleanse is the foundation of any skincare regimen, and that’s why starting off your routine on the right foot is important.

Why We Cleanse

The reasons you wash your face aren’t any different than the reasons you take a shower. Throughout the day the skin accumulates dirt / grime, produces excess oil and generally gets exposed to the elements. Washing your face cleans this buildup from the skin’s surface and within its pores.

But that doesn’t mean that the same treatment we apply to the tougher skin on our back and armpits will work for your face. The skin on your face is particularly sensitive to issues stemming from imbalance, such as dryness, flakiness, oiliness, acne...the list goes on.

That’s why a quality cleanser used with proper technique is critical. Technique is often overlooked, and just as important to execute a proper routine. So even if you think you’ve got it all figured out, read on and you might find a way to treat your face even better.

How to Wash Your Face

Don’t scrub, let the product do the work.

Many of us have a natural tendency to scrub aggressively when cleaning things. Your face is not the place for that. Apply gentle pressure to work the product onto your skin evenly, but don’t use too much force, to avoid damaging or over-stripping the top layer of your skin.

Take your time.

A cleanser needs some time for the ingredients to work their magic. We recommend massaging the product into your skin for at least 15 seconds to ensure even coverage and allow enough time for the formula to interact with your skin.

Pat dry, and use a clean towel.

Similar to over-aggressive application of a cleanser, rubbing your face into a towel to dry it seems to come all too naturally. But once again, too much friction is bad for your skin and can disrupt it. Pat dry instead, and use a clean towel if possible to avoid introducing bacteria onto the freshly-cleaned surface.

Keep it lukewarm.

There’s nothing quite like a nice hot shower, but unfortunately hot water strips the skin of its oils, disrupting the barrier that plays an important role in retaining moisture and protecting the lower layers of skin. This over-stripping can lead to dryness and in some cases irritation. That is why lukewarm water is always recommended.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.

After cleansing, your skin has been swept clean of a layer of dirt and impurities, but it is now exposed to the elements. Finish the job with a good moisturizer, to avoid losing all that precious hydration to the air. A good moisturizer will also replenish your skin of essential nutrients to achieve better skin texture and appearance too.

Finishing Up:

Get all of the above right and you’re well on your way to getting your skin in tip top shape. But the next step, moisturizing, is just as important. Check out our guide on that process as well.
