We Brought the Receipts.

Most skincare products hide their true functional profile behind a veil of 2-3 headline ingredients, making it difficult to evaluate exactly what you're using.

At Como we believe that skincare, and how our formulations work, should be accessible to all. We created this resource to pull back the covers – to help you understand our products, and more importantly allow you to observe and become an expert in your own skin and how it reacts to the products you use.

Knowledge is power.

Key Ingredients We Use, by Function

Cleansers (Surfactants)

Your cleanser choice is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your skincare routine. Get it right, and you set yourself up for healthy, balanced skin. Get it wrong, and you could sabotage your routine and find yourself playing catch-up with moisturizers and other products, wondering why you can’t seem to balance things out.

Where people tend to go wrong is using a cleanser that is too harsh or aggressive – which leads to stripping down of the skin's protective oil barrier. Responsible for water retention and sealing out unwanted pollutants, stripping down of the skin barrier is one of the biggest contributors to dry, flaky skin, and can trigger acne as unwanted bacteria enter the skin's pores. We carefully formulated our Hydrating Cleanser to ensure preservation of your skin's protective oil barrier for a thorough, yet gentle cleanse.

Ingredient Function

Palmitic, Myristic, Stearic and Lauric Acids

This blend of fatty acids provides gentle cleansing action with a particularly low risk of irritation or dehydrating the skin. From a molecular standpoint, these acids are able to bind to both water and oil, which enables them to lift and wash away impurities and dirt from the oily skin surface.

Coco-Glucoside

A mixture of glucose and a fatty alcohol derived from coconuts serves as an extremely gentle secondary cleansing agent in our Hydrating Cleanser.

Hydrators (Humectants)

Fighting moisture loss is a constant battle if you have naturally dry skin or experience harsher, colder or drier climates. Even if you’re lucky enough not to experience persistent dryness, keeping your skin consistently hydrated is critical in the long game against fine lines and wrinkles.

Humectants actively hydrate by drawing water into the skin. While the right combination of cleansing agents, emollients and skin replenishing ingredients can support your skin’s ability to retain the moisture it has – a little extra never hurts.

Ingredient Function

Hyaluronic Acid

Capable of binding to 1,000x its weight in water, Hyaluronic Acid is one of the best ingredients available for boosting the skin's moisture content. This hydrating ability replenishes the skin's outer layers for softer and smoother skin, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Glycerin

A naturally-occurring substance in the skin, Glycerin is responsible for drawing moisture from the air around us and maintaining it in the skin. In addition to providing hydration, it also helps fortify the skin barrier to retain moisture and protect us from external irritants. It is most effective when used with other skin replenishing ingredients and oils, with which it combines to provide substantial benefits for dry and rough skin.

Softening, Smoothing and Sealing (Emollients)

Emollients deliver the main functions that come to mind when you think about moisturizer. Usually lipid (oil) based, their primary purpose is to fill in the gaps between the cells in the top layers of your skin. In doing so, they provide a softer and smoother texture, and enhance water retention to prevent dry skin.

We formulated our Daily Moisturizer with a combination of emollients that will keep your skin hydrated all day, while softening and smoothing your skin and reducing sensitivity for those with finicky skin.

Ingredient Function

Ceramides

Ceramides are naturally-occurring fats found in the skin, and are essential to its ability to retain water. With multiple types present in the skin, supplementing them can improve skin texture and reduce sensitivity. They are the namesake ingredient inCeraveproducts you’ll find at the store.

Squalane

A chemically stable version of Squalene (found in human skin but also present in plants), Squalane is one of the most effective ingredients available for boosting the skin’s moisture retention. In addition to its moisturizing abilities, it is also a rich source of antioxidants and regular use can boost collagen production for firmer skin.

Caprylic / Capric Triglyceride

A combination of coconut oil and glycerin, this mixture of fatty acids replenishes the skin surface to soften skin and prevent moisture loss.

Shea Butter

Best known for its ability to replenish, soften and smooth the surface of dry skin, Shea Butter is also known as a rich source of antioxidants.

Antioxidants / Natural Antioxidant Sources

Antioxidants are lauded by nearly every health expert to the point of cliché. Most often recognized for their health benefits as part of our diets, antioxidants actually have an extremely important role to play in the health and longevity of our skin as well.

Their primary mode of action is to prevent and slow damage caused by free-radicals, which are unstable molecules created in response to environmental conditions. Buildup of free radicals anywhere in the body can lead to long-term damage, and when it comes to your skin those concerns are closely tied to aging: discoloration, wrinkles, loose skin and inflammation.

Because aging is a slow and gradual process, maintaining a healthy dose of antioxidants in your skincare routine is essential even if you aren’t yet seeing it in the mirror. For those of us already experiencing the slow march of aging, antioxidant treatments are a key tool in our skincare arsenal.

Ingredient Function

Vitamin E

An essential antioxidant that occurs naturally in the skin. Decades of research show that it plays an important role in photoprotection, preventing UV-induced free radical damage to the skin, and has anti-inflammatory and healing effects.

Niacinamide

Also known as Vitamin B3, Niacinamide offers a multitude of benefits for aging and blemish-prone skin. It is best known for its ability to smooth out uneven skin tone, reduce the appearance of both pores and sunspots, and moderate skin sebum (oil) production. Additionally, it has been shown to be effective in the treatment of mild to moderate acne.

Algae Extract

Found in utra-premium skincare products such asLa Mer, studies have shown that sea algae is a rich natural source of antioxidants, and have noted its benefits for aging skin.

Argan Oil

Derived from the seeds of argan trees, Argan Oil is a good source of antioxidants like Vitamin E, as well as other beneficial fatty acids, meaning it serves a dual purpose as both a source of antioxidants and an emollient.
